Oprah Winfrey - Most Admired Entrepreneur on About.com

Oprah Winfrey suffered abuse and molestation by relatives and lived in poverty when she was young. Oprah Winfrey's broadcasting career began at age 17, when she was hired by WVOL radio in Nashville, and two years later signed on with WTVF-TV in Nashville as a reporter/anchor. She later won a scholarship to Tennessee State University, where she majored in Speech Communications and Performing Arts.

Not content to work for somoeone else, in 1988, Oprah founded her own production facility, Harpo Studios (that's "Oprah" spelled backwards). Since then, it has grown into Harpo, Inc. She also co-founded Oxygen Media, which operates the Oxygen Network, a cable network for women reaching more than 54 million viewers.

Oprah Winfrey is the first black woman billionaire, with a long list of business accomplishments and awards. Readers voted Oprah Winfrey as the "Most Admired Entrepreneur" on About.com, with nearly double the votes of Bill Gates and four times that of Richard Branson.
